Defend Your Dollars is the website of the Consumers Union Financial Services Campaign, where we support reforms to the financial marketplace to curb bad practices by banks and lenders.
Your credit that is--starting January 1, 2007. SB 180, a security freeze bill, was signed into law last week by Governor Rendell.
The security freeze enables you to freeze your credit files from unwanted new accounts--which helps to block out identity thieves from wrecking havoc on your identity and finances.
How do you go about placing the security freeze?
1. Make a request to the 3 large credit bureaus: Equifax, Transunion and Experian.
2. Pay a fee unless you're an identity theft victim (provide required documentation).
3. Provide other necessary documentation.
