Consumers To Governorator: Sign SB 933!

The SF Chronicle is covering one of our California state legislature bills:

"Charging people a fee for using their debit cards to pay for goods and services will soon be illegal, if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signs a bill narrowly approved by the state Assembly on Thursday."

The fact is Californians shouldn’t be penalized for using their debit cards. After all, debit cards use cash that you already have – a smart thing to do in this treacherous economy.

Yet every time you use your debit card in California, merchants in the state can add a ‘surcharge’ to your bill. So if you are a California resident take a moment and drop the Governor a line at:

Tell him to sign SB 933 into law and close the loophole on debit card surcharges.

This bill is only fair as the bank has my money and makes interest already at my money.

If the retailer can not pass the fee charged to them the who pays the fee ? It will just cause the price of purchase to go higher .this bill should prohibit the banks from charging a fee .Good luck with that.

The Retailer all ready has the fee's in the price they charge yor for a item. If you pay with a credit card they can't charge you the fee's and they have no idea if you are going to paid with cash, credit or debit. So anyone who thinks SB 933 is going to cause higher prices I have a bridge for sale in New York for you.

Oh misinformed Jeff. You obviously know nothing of business nor how this bill would kill many gas stations who already operate on thin margins. Job killing isn't what we should be doing now. All SB 933 tried to do was shift the burden of the interchange fees onto the backs of the small businesses. How stupid can one be? It does nothing to limit Visa's fees(Visa lobbied 30 million for this bill) which are the true root of the problem. It got vetoed though.
